How The Humane Society Of The United States.
The Humane Society of the United States is involved in more than keeping animals which have been rescued for people to come and adopt. While part of the work conducted by the organization is to help the local organizations in their work, HSUS’s work is usually more than that. To bring out the complex work the organization carries out using simple words, the organization’s motto is ‘Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty’.
Thousnds of species exist today in the world today. Part of the work that HSUS gets involved in is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. The organization works globally not just in the United States and has been involved in work to save animals found deep in the Ocean. Racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research are some of the activities that rescued animals have been involved in. However, these are some of the activities because the list is long.
It is the work of HSUS to work with pet owners in ensuring their safety and security and also providing the support to the other local animal shelters HSUS has also been in the forefront in pushing for pushing for pieces of legislation both locally and internationally. It is the aim of the organization that through the legislation animal cruelty will be dealt with. Animals are also victims when a disaster such as when the Tsunami hit the South East Asia in 2004. In such scenarios the HSUS is always ready to travel in the area to help in the rescue mission of the animals. The organization also thinks about the welfare of backyard animals such as the squirrels, mice and raccoons by educating homeowners of how to peacefully coexist with them.
In the united states, HSUS was not the first organization to be involved in animal welfare. The first organization to be founded was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals and was founded in 1886. This was the first organization to advocate for animal rights. Subsequently, more organizations came up. In 1887, delegates from these organizations agreed to collapse and form the American Humane Association. The disagreements among some members led to some of the leaving and forming HSUS.
The main aim of HSUS is to eradicate animal cruelty worldwide. The first legislation which it pushed was the removal of the law that required shelters to turn over animals to be used in research work. Many laws in the U.S have passed. The laws range from those protecting endangered species to those that make it illegal to mistreat research animals inhumanly.
